Getting Around Taiwan

Taiwan has two train systems that connect the island’s cities: the Taiwan High Speed Rail (THSR) and the Taiwan Railway Administration (TRA). There is also an extensive network of intercity buses. Taipei and Kaohsiung both have Mass Rapid Transit systems, with stations and trains clearly marked in English. Most of the stations have information booths near the ticket vending machines. It is not permitted to eat or drink within the stations once you pass the gates. If you are going to stay in Taiwan for an extended period of time, you may wish to purchase a rechargeable transit card, which can be bought and recharged at convenience stores, machines located in the stations, and at ticket offices. The city bus services in Taipei are also a good option and are quite accessible to those who cannot understand any Chinese. Payments on the buses can be made by cash or by card. Taxis are easy to find in all of Taiwan’s cities and are fairly inexpensive. Taiwanese taxi drivers have a reputation for being friendly and honest, but you should make sure to have your destination written down in Chinese to avoid frustration, since most cab drivers cannot speak English. If you are taking a cab outside of urban areas, drivers may charge a flat rate rather than run the meter. In small urban areas, taxis can be hard to find, so it’s often a good idea to keep the driver’s number in case you need to use a cab again to leave the area. Renting a car is not recommended if you are staying in Taipei, however you may wish to rent a car if you are heading out of the city. Otherwise, city driving tends to be hectic and parking is scarce.
