Things To Do In Gothenburg

In the center of the city, you will see the iconic Gothenburg Central Station, which was first opened in 1858. Nearby stands the famous Skanskaskrapan, nicknamed ‘The Lipstick’, a red- and white-striped skyscraper designed by Ralph Erskine and built in the late 1980s. You can take an elevator to the top floor of the tower, the Götheborgsutkiken (Gothenburg Lookout), for a great view of the city below. The Gothenburg Opera sits by the shore of the Göta Älv at Lilla Bommen, a fascinating building that architect Jan Izikowitz claims was inspired by the wings of a seagull. Another famous building to check out when you arrive on business class flights to Gothenburg is the indoor fish market in the city center, called the Feskekörka, literally the ‘Fish Church’, so-named because of its resemblance to a Gothic church.

Gothenburg is host to a plethora of top-notch museums and galleries. The Konstmuseum contains the city’s greatest collection of art, including works by Van Gogh, Rembrandt, and Picasso. Many Scandinavian masters are represented, as well, such as Liljefors, Munch, Zorn, and Larsson. The museum spans six floors of art spanning from the Renaissance to present day. Other highlights include the infamous Poseidon fountain in the front of the building, the temporary exhibits of up-and-coming Nordic artists, and the sculpture hall. Another top-rated gallery in town is the cutting-edge Röda Sten Konsthall, housed within an old power station next to the Älvsborg Bridge.

A visit to Gothenburg wouldn’t be complete without sampling some of its phenomenal cuisine. As a coastal city, there is a lot of amazing fresh fish and seafood. Be sure to try some inlagt sill, pickled herring, which is a Swedish staple. Pair rich herring dishes with some strong local Snaps, especially the locally favored O.P. Anderson brand. If you are in Gothenburg in the winter, this is the best time to try the amazing oysters caught off the West Coast of Sweden. Head to a restaurant called Gabriel, located in the Fish Church, to sample their world-class menu, especially the famous shellfish and freshly caught cod. Take a coffee break at one of the many excellent Gothenburg cafes, such as Café Husaren, Café Kronhuset, Café Da Matteo, and Café Kringlan. Café Husaren claims to be the inventor of the cinnamon bun, so be sure to order one of these irresistible pastries with your coffee when you stop by.

Getting Around Gothenburg

Gothenburg has a compact city center and most of the sights are an easy stroll apart, so it’s highly recommended to walk around. Not only will you see the sights, but you will also get a real sense of the culture of this beautiful city. There are also a number of excellent parks and gardens to explore. There is a wonderful network of bicycle paths that will take you all over the city, and bike shops offering rentals are ubiquitous throughout the city center. There is also an automated bike loan service that is free for 30 minutes at a time. The public transportation system consists of trams, buses, and boats. Note that you cannot purchase tickets on board the city buses. The extensive tram system is quite iconic and is the largest light rail network in Scandinavia. Trams are the most efficient means of transit in the city center, but if you plan on going beyond that, you may need to take a bus. There are two ferry services that take passengers across the river, as well as provide excellent views of Gothenburg from the water. The Styrsöbolaget ferry is part of the public transit system, and it accepts the same tickets. The Älvsnabben ferry runs between Rosenlund and Lindholmspiren and is free during business hours. Taxis are very expensive, as the fares are not regulated, and they charge different rates depending on the time of day. Taxis are generally safe and clean, the drivers helpful. There are, however, illegal taxis that should be avoided. They are recognizable because they will have no company markings and no meter.

Business class flights to Gothenburg always guarantee an exceptionally memorable journey to this fantastic city. From beginning to end, you will be treated to the best services and amenities, ensuring you arrive at this exciting and friendly destination feeling great and ready to make the most of your visit. Whether you are traveling for work or for pleasure, nothing compares to the luxury of flying in business class!
