Things To Do In Moscow

The very first destination that you’ll want to head to when you arrive in Moscow is probably the iconic Red Square in the heart of the city. In the center of the square, you will find the Lenin Mausoleum. You can view the embalmed remains of Vladimir Lenin, who has been stationed there since 1924. Note that guards strictly enforce the no-photography policy at the mausoleum. On the south side of the Red Square stands Russia’s most iconic building, the dazzlingly colorful St. Basil’s Cathedral. Officially known as the Cathedral of the Intercession of the Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat, the building was commissioned by Ivan the Terrible to commemorate his victory over Kazan and Astrakhan and was completed in 1561.

Upon Borovitsky Hill on the north side of the Moscow River, you will find the Kremlin complex. Visit its five church-museums, the Armory, the Diamond Fund Exhibition, the Patriarch Palace, and the Ivan the Great Bell Tower. The entire complex is enclosed by high walls, and you can get the best view of the entire thing from Sofiyskaya nab from the other side of the river. The exterior of the Grand Kremlin Palace, the official residence of Russia’s president, can be seen when you visit the Kremlin complex, but if you want to go inside, you must book a tour in advance. The UNESCO-listed Assumption Cathedral, with its five golden domes, is also a must-see, lying in the very center of the Kremlin’s Cathedral Square.

The Pushkin Museum of Fine Arts contains one of the world’s finest international art collections and includes three branches. It has an especially impressive collection of Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings in the 19th and 20th Century Art Gallery, including masterpieces by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Matisse, and Picasso. There is also a top-notch archaeological collection. The State Tretyakov Gallery is another excellent museum to get lost in. It houses the world’s premier collection of Russian icons and pre-revolutionary art created by some of the country’s most renowned artists, including works by the group of 19th-century painters known as the Peredvizhniki, or ‘Wanderers’.

Although you certainly won’t have any trouble remembering this unforgettable city when you take business class flights to Moscow, you’ll definitely want to pick up a few souvenirs while you’re in town. Matryoshka dolls, those cheerfully painted wooden nesting dolls, are an instantly recognizable symbol of Russia. Lacquered handicrafts painted in red, gold, and black, are also quintessentially Russian. Head to Yekaterina, one of the country’s oldest furriers, and pick up an authentic shapky (fur hat) or shuby (fur coat). For a truly luxurious shopping experience, check out the GUM shopping center. Constructed in the 1890s, with a skylight roof and three levels of shops, it is perhaps one of the most spectacular malls you will ever encounter.

Moscow is a large, cosmopolitan city, so there are a lot of dining options. However, if you’d like to try eating like a local, there are a lot of delicious options. Blinis are a popular type of Russian crepe, usually filled with sour cream and jam, caviar, or smoked salmon. Pelmeni are a sort of dumpling stuffed with meat or fish, and varenniki are similar, except stuffed with cheese, potato, cabbage, egg, or fruit. There are also countless delicious soups, such as borscht, okroshka, shchi, and solyanka. For a truly special meal in Moscow, try Café Pushkin, Chemodan, Twins, or Varenichnaya No. 1.

Getting Around Moscow

The greatest way to get to know Moscow is to explore it on foot. Nothing will immerse you in the culture like taking the time to wander the city center! However, to cover larger distances, you have several options. There is an excellent metro system, which in itself is worth visiting just to see the beautiful architecture of its train stations. The metro is open from 5:30 am to 1:00 am. There are also buses, trolleybuses, trams, and marshrutkas – a sort of shared taxi. The best approach to taking a taxi in Moscow is to use a taxi or rideshare app, as there are a lot of unofficial taxis that tend to hang around tourist areas and will try to overcharge tourists. Always negotiate a fixed price before entering a cab. Driving in Moscow isn’t recommended, due to the immense traffic. There are several good on-and-off bus services that offer sightseeing tours, which are a great way to see lots of the sights in a short amount of time.

There is far too much to see and do in Russia’s capital for just one visit. However, when you book business class tickets to Moscow, you’ll be guaranteed an efficient and enjoyable trip. Don’t waste a moment recovering from jet lag and travel exhaustion. Premium tickets are the savvy traveler’s way of ensuring proper rest and a delightful voyage from start to finish, so they can see and do as much as possible when they touch down in this Russian beauty.
