Things To Do In Berlin

Berlin is a massive city and there is more to see and do here than could ever be fit into one visit. A classic place to start is at the Brandenburg Gate, an unmistakable icon of this city built in the 18th century, located in the part of Berlin called Mitte in the city center. From here you can walk through the lovely wooded Tiergarten, or walk along 17 Juni and head toward the Siegessäule (Victory Column), which is topped by an angelic figure nicknamed ‘Golden Elsie’. Close by is the Gas Lantern Museum, an open-air collection of old-fashioned street lamps from across the continent and the United Kingdom. Past the museum, you can cross the bridge over the canal and visit the pleasant Zoological Gardens, which is home to more different species of creatures than any other zoo in the world.

Berlin possesses a vast collection of museums, so if you plan on visiting many museums, something to consider is a 3-day Museum Pass which grants access to about 55 state-run museums. Definitely head to Museumsinsel (Museum Island), best known for the Pergamon Museum, where you can view ancient Greek and Middle-Eastern art and architecture. There is also the Altes Museum, which specializes in Egyptian history, the Alte Nationalgalerie, which features mostly German art, and the Bode Museum, with its impressive collection of sculptures and Byzantine artwork. Other museums found in the city include Kulturforum, Museen Charlottenberg, and Museen Dahlen, but that is just the tip of the iceberg. Berlin, of course, is an art city, so there are also many art galleries such as Art Center Berlin Friedrichstrasse, Galerie Elgen & Art, and Loop – Raum für aktuelle Kunst. There are also countless theatres, cinemas, concert halls and more in Berlin. See one of the best orchestras in the world perform at the Philharmonie, or see some live theater at English Theater Berlin.

There are many buildings of note in Berlin. The Berliner Fernsehturn, the TV tower, is the tallest building in the city, where you can dine in the rotating restaurant and bar at the top as you look out across the vast cityscape, if the day is clear. The Berliner Dom is the largest church, and you can climb to the top of its dome for another wonderful view of Berlin from above. Known for its ‘broken tooth’ spire, the Kaiser Wilhelm Memorial Church on Breitscheidplatz is a historical landmark and a reminder of a devastating past, the church having been nearly annihilated during World War II.

Berlin is dotted with the scars of its past, and it is an endearing quality of this city that it makes no attempt to hide them. Instead, you are encouraged to visit the sites and contemplate their nature. A visit to the Topography of Terror informs the viewer of Gestapo activity during the Nazi years between 1933-1945. The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe is a giant public artwork that covers an entire block close to the Brandenburg Gate and includes a museum focused on the Holocaust and its victims. Another moving and fascinating activity on your visit is to seek out the stark Berlin Wall Memorial and to even traverse its entire historical course by bicycle, marked by the Mauerweg route, beginning at Potsdam per Pedales.

Although Berlin is a very international city and has so many top-notch options for food, be sure to try some traditional local dishes like sausage and schnitzel, or the Berliner favorite, Currywurst, which is sliced bratwurst covered in a curried ketchup. You can find Currywurst anywhere in Berlin from a street vendor, but some of the most famous Currywurst stands are Konnopke’s Imbiss and Yoyo Foodworld. Another popular Berliner favorite is Döner, which is ubiquitous around the city at Turkish food stands. A couple of good areas to go for authentic food in Berlin are Hackescher Markt and Kastanienallee.

Kurfürstendamm (or Ku’damm) is the west end’s main shopping street, where you can find all the latest styles and fashions. Other major shopping areas include KaDeWe, which is allegedly the biggest department store in Europe, Friedrichstrasse in former East Berlin, Schloss-strasse, Wilmersdorfer Strasse, and Karl-Marx-Strasse. There are also scores of flea markets around Berlin, mostly on weekends, such as Strasse des 17 Juni, Mauerpark, Arkonaplatz, Art-Market at Zeughaus and Maybachufer.

Getting Around Berlin

Berlin is an enormous city, but you can get around easily and quickly using their excellent public transportation, a system that includes buses, trams, trains, and the metro. Tickets are based on zones, but there are options for unlimited travel between zones, as well. Tickets can be purchased at vending machines at the U- and S-Bahn platforms, and payment is generally taken in the form of coins and German bankcards. Beware of fraudsters trying to sell you used one-way tickets, and beware pickpockets on the metro! It’s also good to note while navigating the city that house numbers do not always run in one direction. Often the case is that one side of the street runs up and the other runs down.

Berlin is an incredible city full of delightful surprises, rich culture, and history. When you book business class flights to Berlin, you know that you will be making the most of your trip to this complex and exciting city. Enjoy every moment of your journey from start to finish with the most lavish treatment and luxurious amenities. Business class flights to Berlin are the smart traveler’s guarantee for an unforgettable trip.
