Things To Do In Pisa

To the north of central Pisa lies the UNESCO World Heritage site of the Piazza dei Miracoli (Field of Miracles), where you will find the Torre Pendente, the famous Leaning Tower of Pisa. This structure was originally intended as a bell tower for a cathedral in the 12th century. However, the tower began to lean almost immediately due to a fault in the ground underneath. Centuries later, in 2001, a massive operation was completed to ensure that the tower would lean no further and collapse. If you want to go in, you will need to book a reservation, but the climb to the top is worthwhile for the view. Also located in this area are the Romanesque Duomo di Pisa, the Battistero, from which you can get a great view of the Leaning Tower, and the Campo Santo Monumentale, which is an enormous cemetery that includes ancient Roman sarcophagi.

Another part of town is the Piazza dei Cavalieri, a small town square that also is home to many beautiful medieval and Renaissance palazzos and churches. Many of them are not open to the public, but it is still worth walking around to see them. Some of these sights include the Palazzo della Carovana, Palazzo dell’Orologio, and Chiesa di Santo Stefano.

There are also several fantastic museums in Pisa worth visiting. Museo delle Sinopie displays wonderful frescoes and several sinopie, which are red ochre underdrawings that were used as preliminary sketches. Museo Nazionale di San Matteo is an excellent repository of medieval artworks held within a 13th-century Benedictine convent, including Masaccio’s ‘St. Paul’, Fra’ Angelica’s ‘Madonna of Humility’, and Simone Martini’s ‘Polyptych of Saint Catherine’. The Museo dell’Opera del Duomo also contains a fabulous collection of works. Pisano’s ivory carvings, the ‘Madonna and Child’ and ‘Madonna del Colloquio’, are highlights.

If you are taking business class flights to Pisa in the summertime, there are some interesting seasonal events to check out. The Luminara Festival happens in June and visitors will see the lights along the Arno dimmed as over 10,000 candles are lit. The Gioco del Ponte is another summertime attraction, in which two teams battle to ‘conquer’ the city’s main bridge, the Ponte di Mezzo, by pushing a trolley in an attempt to force the other team off the bridge.

The main shopping area in Pisa is the Corso Italia area, found between the railway station and the Ponte di Mezzo. Via Borgo Stretto is also a good area, in addition to the copious number of boutiques and specialty shops you will find throughout the city. The area close to the Leaning Tower has a lot of souvenir stands. If you feel like taking a short drive outside of the city, visit San Miniato, a charming little village just 40 minutes east of Pisa, which is world famous for its truffles. Here, you can taste the local delicacy at the source, and even go truffle hunting. The well-known white truffle hunts occur between September and December, and the Marzuolo truffle is sought in the spring. Back in Pisa, some other excellent regional gourmet products you can find include Cinta Senese boar and San Rossore honey. Dine at Pizzeria Il Montino, Ir Tegame, Ristorante Galileo, and Romeo for some tasty Tuscan food, and top it off with some delicious gelato from Gelateria De’ Coltelli.

Getting Around Pisa

Residents with permits are the only ones allowed to drive and park in the historical city center of Pisa. These limited zones are tracked by camera, so it is best to plan your route accordingly. Once you enter the permit-only area, it is almost impossible to pass only one camera, and each time you do so, you will incur a fine. Violators are tracked down, although it may take over a year for the fine to arrive. There is a free car park just outside the permit-only zone on Lungarno Guadalongo on the south side of the Arno. Although Pisa is compact and the sights are a walkable distance from each other, you will want to rent a vehicle if you plan on exploring more of Tuscany outside of Pisa. Many car rental agencies can be found at the airport. There are buses to help you get around town if you like, and tickets are available from tobacco shops and vending machines found at stations. Bike rentals and rickshaws are also available in the city center.

Whether you are traveling for business or for pleasure, you are guaranteed an unforgettable trip to one of Italy’s top destinations when you book business class flights to Pisa. Travel in comfort and style and arrive at your destination feeling energized, so that you can make the most of your trip to this charming city. From the moment you book your premium tickets, you will embark upon a one-of-a-kind journey that you will wish to repeat again and again.
