Things To Do In Hannover

When you arrive on business class flights to Hannover, something you might immediately notice is that this is not your standard European town. This is because Hannover was one of the worst hit in the bombings of World War II, and many of its historical buildings and landmarks were obliterated. The Altstadt (Old City) is actually a conglomeration of some of what managed to survive the 80 Allied bombing raids. About 40 old houses were moved from various places around the city to populate the city center. The surrounding areas are filled mostly with somber 1950s-era buildings. Hannover, however, still has a number of neighborhoods that feature Victorian and Art Nouveau facades, such as Oststadt, List and Linden. Hannover’s main commercial area is called Kröpcke and lies in the city center. It is also home to the Opera House, the Hannover Stadtbahn Station, and a big green clock called the KröpckeUhr, which makes for an excellent meeting spot.

An excellent means of getting introduced to Hannover past and present is to follow a trail called the Red Thread. Make your way to the Neues Rathaus (New City Hall), opened in 1913. There is a museum at the ground level where you can learn about four important periods in Hannover’s development up to present day. You can climb to the cupola to view the city, the north German plain, and the Maschsee in the south. For yet another view of the city, try the portico of the Public Works Department.

The Marktkirche, Hannover’s main Lutheran church, is a 14th-century church that was restored in 1952, and remains an important landmark of the city. The Altes Rathaus (Old City Hall), built in the 15th century, is the oldest secular building in town, and was also restored after the war. Hannover is also known for its abundant greenery and lovely parks, so be sure to head to the famed Baroque Herrenhäuser Gärten (Great Garden of Herrenhausen). This garden was created as a copy of the French Versailles Garden, and it’s a beauty to visit even in the winter. If it’s a sunny day, the Stadtpark, Eilenriede, and City Park are all beautiful parks within the city for a mini-escape.

There are plentiful museums in Hannover, many of which can be visited for free on Fridays. Consider visiting the Landesmuseum, which focuses on Lower Saxony’s history, the Historical Museum, which traces the history of the city from its very beginning, and the Kestner Museum, which has collections of Egyptian, Roman, Greek and Medieval objects. For art, there is the Sprengel Museum, which features works by Picasso, Klee and Niki de Saint-Phalle, who is an important artist for Hannover, having designed many public art pieces found scattered about the city.

For your local beer fix, be sure to try the golden Herrenhäuser Premium Pilsener. You can enjoy this and many other delicious brews at one of the many beer gardens around Hannover, such as Biercafé Pindopp, Waterloo Biergarten, Lister Turm Biergarten, and Kaiserschanefe-Biergarten am Sportpark. Another typical Hannover beverage is Lüttje Lage, which is a drink made from beer and Kornbrand (grain liquor), consumed simultaneously from two separate glasses. If you are feeling hungry, treat yourself to an unparalleled dining experience at one of the many fine eating establishments in Hannover, like Basil, Brasserie Bruxelles, Pier51, or Vienna Café & Restaurant.

Bike lanes are also provided on almost every main street through the city center. Make sure that the bike you ride has both front and rear lights, otherwise you might be pulled over by the police and have to pay a fine. Taxis in Hannover are very expensive, but can be ideal if you are traveling with a larger group, in which case you can save money by ordering a 7- or 9- person taxi in advance, which will cost you the same as if you were traveling with just 2 or 3 people. Other than that, Hannover has a wonderful public transportation network that includes trams, buses, and the metro.
