Things To Do In Venice

The center point of the city is the beautiful Rialto Bridge crossing the Grand Canal. On the left bank is the part of the city made famous by Shakespeare in ‘The Merchant of Venice’, while the right bank is the setting for Othello, and the location of the Piazza San Marco. This Piazza is where you will find the unforgettable Basilica di San Marco, one of Venice’s top tourist destinations, nicknamed Chiesa d’Oro (Church of Gold). The Basilica di Santa Maria Gloriosa dei Frari, usually called I Frari, is an amazing Gothic church and one of the best in the city. The Basilica Santa Maria della Salute, also known simply as the Salute, is another important and breathtaking church. The Venetian Gothic Palazzo Ducale, also called the Doge’s Palace, is seated immediately on the waterfront. Standard tickets allow visitors to tour the grand central courtyard, the Museo dell’Opera, and the main parts of the palace, including the staterooms, armory, prisons, and more. The Doge’s Apartments contain temporary art exhibitions that cost extra to visit.

There are far too many galleries and museums to see in one trip to Venice, but a good place to start is the historic Gallerie dell’Academia. This gallery houses works of Venetian art ranging from the 14th to the 18th centuries, including works by Bellini, Titian, Tintoretto, Canaletto, and more. Scuola Grande di San Rocco is renowned for its collection of works by Tintoretto. Don’t miss the Peggy Guggenheim Collection, housed in her enormous canalside home, Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, where you can behold the famed heiress’ personal collection of surrealist, futurist, and abstract expressionist art, including works by Max Ernst, Jackson Pollock, Picasso, and Salvador Dali. Another great gallery that plays host to many ambitious, large-scale contemporary artworks is the Punta della Dogana, which is contained in a fantastically restored customs warehouse.

When you travel on business class flights to Venice, you will notice that the city is replete with wonderful places to shop, and boasts many specialty stores carrying local artisanal products and designer Italian fashion. For Venetian masks and costumes, try Atelier Marega, Ca’ Macana Atelier, or Nicolao Atelier. Venice is also renowned for producing gorgeous paper products and stationary, and you can find special notebooks, albums and more at Paolo Olbi. Yet another thing Venice is known for is amazing glass art, so stop by Cesare Toffol, ElleElle, and Marina e Susanna Sent, for some incredible wearable art, Murano glass pieces, vessels, lamps, and more. Gmeiner, Pied à Terre, Declare, Ottica Vascellari, and Kalimala are all sure to satisfy any fashion enthusiast seeking the latest in fine Italian designs.

Venetian food is quite different from what most visitors expect from an Italian city. Pasta and pizza are not what the locals eat, but instead, due to the city’s unique lagoon location and gardens on the island of Sant’Erasmo, Venetian cuisine leans heavily toward flavorful dishes based on fish and vegetables. Try sarde in saor, baccala mantecato, risotto al nero di sepia, risi e bisi, bigoli in salsa, and fegato alla Veneziana. Small green crabs known as moleche are a seasonal delicacy. If you’re visiting during the Carnevale, be sure to try the sweet pastry fritters known as fritole. The Veneto region also has an incredible climate for growing great wine grapes. A bottle of Soave is especially appropriate to accompany all of the delectable seafood dishes. Be sure to treat yourself to an excellent Venetian coffee while you are here, too. A popular local chain for coffee is E Rosa Salva.

Getting Around Venice

Any trip to Venice wouldn’t be quite complete without traversing the canals on a gondola. Gondola rides can be quite expensive, but you are welcome to try bargaining with the gondolier for a lower price! Other options for getting around on the water are the vaporettos (water buses), which often offer incredible sightseeing tours with on-and-off stops along the way, and the traghettos, which are essentially older gondolas that have been adapted to serve as municipal ferries. Getting around Venice on foot is a joyful experience, as it is the world’s only pedestrian city. The Rialtine Islands, which make up the main part of Venice, only take about an hour to walk. The city is conveniently decked out with many signs that will point you in the direction of the main attractions. Note that Venetian street addresses use district numbers (sestriere), not street numbers. To find something on a map, you must know which district it is in. Numbering begins at the part of the district closest to the Grand Canal, and the numbers increase as you get further away from the canal.
